Polling stations open at start of crucial day for Keir Starmer’s premiership

Polling stations have opened across England, Scotland and Wales in what political analysts are calling the most significant electoral challenge yet for Prime Minister Keir Starmer since Labour’s return to power in 2024.

Polling stations have opened across England, Scotland and Wales in what political analysts are calling the most significant electoral challenge yet for Prime Minister Keir Starmer since Labour’s return to power in 2024.

Millions of voters are heading to polling stations to elect local councillors, mayors, Members of the Scottish Parliament (MSPs), and Senedd members in Wales. More than 5,000 council seats are being contested across 136 English local authorities, alongside devolved elections in Scotland and Wales. The elections are widely being viewed as a referendum on the Labour government’s performance during its first two years in office. Early polling suggests Labour could suffer heavy losses in several traditional strongholds, while parties such as Reform UK, the Greens, and the Liberal Democrats are expected to make gains.According to political estimates, Labour strategists fear the party could lose hundreds of council seats nationwide. The outcome may intensify internal pressure on Starmer’s leadership if Labour underperforms expectations.Speaking ahead of polling day, Starmer urged voters to reject division and support Labour’s platform during what he described as a period of “global instability.”

The Prime Minister cast his vote in central London alongside his wife, Victoria Starmer.Meanwhile, Reform UK has continued to gain momentum in several battleground regions, particularly in parts of northern England and Wales. The Green Party is also targeting urban Labour-held councils, especially in London boroughs and university towns.Polling stations opened at 7am and will close at 10pm local time. Electoral authorities confirmed that voters already in queue by the deadline will still be permitted to cast their ballots. In England, voters are required to present valid photo identification under rules introduced through the Elections Act 2022, while Scotland and Wales do not require ID for devolved elections.

Vote counting is expected to begin overnight, with early declarations arriving from some English councils during the early hours of Friday morning. Most results from local councils, Scottish Parliament seats, and Welsh Senedd constituencies are expected throughout Friday and into Saturday.Political observers say the results could reshape the UK political landscape ahead of the next general election, especially if Labour loses ground to both Reform UK on the right and Green candidates on the left.
