After UDF’s massive victory in Kerala Election 2026, the big question now is who will lead the next government. K C Venugopal, V D Satheesan and Ramesh Chennithala are among the key names being discussed
The Congress-led United Democratic Front has made a powerful comeback in Kerala, securing a huge mandate in the 2026 Assembly election. With UDF winning a commanding majority in the 140-member Assembly, political attention has now shifted from the results to the next big question: Who will become the next Chief Minister of Kerala? The victory marks a major political turning point in the state, where the CPI(M)-led LDF had been in power for two consecutive terms. UDF’s strong performance has given Congress and its allies a clear opportunity to form the next government, but the leadership decision is expected to be watched closely across Kerala.
Among the names being discussed are K C Venugopal, V D Satheesan, and Ramesh Chennithala. Each leader brings a different political strength to the table, making the Chief Minister selection one of the most important decisions for the Congress leadership.
V D Satheesan is currently one of the most prominent Congress faces in Kerala politics. As a strong opposition leader, he played a visible role in taking on the LDF government and strengthening UDF’s campaign narrative. His leadership during the election period has made him a serious contender in the post-result discussions.
Ramesh Chennithala is another experienced leader with deep organisational and administrative experience. A former Leader of the Opposition and a senior Congress figure, Chennithala has long been seen as one of the party’s most recognisable leaders in Kerala. His experience could make him a strong choice if the party prioritises stability and seniority.
K C Venugopal, a key national-level Congress leader, is also being discussed in political circles. His strong position within the Congress high command and national leadership gives his name significance in the Chief Minister debate. Reports have also highlighted that a person does not necessarily need to be an MLA at the time of becoming Chief Minister, as they can be elected within six months, making his name politically relevant in the discussion.
However, Congress is expected to make the final decision only after internal consultations with elected MLAs, UDF allies and the party high command. The leadership choice will be crucial because the next Chief Minister will have to manage a large mandate, alliance expectations and public hopes for a new phase of governance in Kerala.
For now, Kerala waits for the official announcement. The UDF has won big, but the leadership race has just begun.
