Tamil Nadu CM Vijay Resigns from Trichy East Seat, Retains Perambur Constituency

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and TVK chief Vijay has resigned from the Trichy East Assembly seat while choosing to retain Perambur, setting the stage for a future by-election.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam chief Vijay has resigned from the Trichy East Assembly constituency, one of the two seats he won in the 2026 Assembly elections. He will continue as the MLA from Perambur, which he has chosen to retain.
The resignation comes shortly after Vijay assumed office as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. Since a candidate cannot continue representing two Assembly constituencies at the same time, one seat has to be vacated. With Vijay stepping down from Trichy East, the Assembly Secretariat is expected to notify the vacancy, after which the Election Commission will move toward conducting a by-election.
The decision is being seen as a strategic political move by the TVK leadership. Perambur now becomes Vijay’s official Assembly base, while Trichy East will become an important by-election battleground in the coming months.
The by-election may also test TVK’s ground strength after government formation. Opposition parties are expected to closely watch the constituency, as the result could indicate whether the new ruling party’s momentum continues beyond the main election verdict.
For now, the focus remains on how soon the vacancy is formally notified and when the Election Commission schedules the by-election.
